Where do cactus spines grow?
Cacti belong to the family Cactaceae. Their spines arise from specialized structures called areoles. These small, often woolly sites are a defining feature of cacti; their arrangement gives a stem much of its visible pattern. The areoles of ribbed cacti can follow the ribs, while other forms carry them on tubercles.
Radial and central spines
Botanical descriptions often distinguish spines spreading around an areole from more prominent central spines. Their number, length and form vary between species. A central spine may be longer or hooked; do not assume every cactus has the same arrangement. Here, radial count and curvature are artistic controls inspired by those differences.
